Stylish and Functional Canvas Door and Window Awnings

Canvas awnings do two jobs at once: they cool the rooms behind the glass, and they give a plain façade real character. Here's how to choose the design, the fabric and the installer.

Why canvas still wins hearts

Aluminium may be the practical champion, but canvas has a warmth nothing else matches — the seaside-café stripe, the deep solid colour against whitewashed walls. On the right house, canvas awnings look like they were always meant to be there, and they've been doing the same quiet work for a century: keeping sun off the glass so rooms stay cool and interiors don't fade.

The two classic designs

Pram awnings

The full, curved canopy — ideal over doors, sash windows and shopfronts, especially on traditional and heritage buildings. Ours are framed in aluminium or meranti wood, either fixed in place or retractable on a rope-and-pulley system.

Fall-arm awnings

A straight drop that kicks out on pivoting arms, adjustable to any angle with a gearbox. Perfect for sun-tracking through the day: flat against the window in wind, fully extended at midday.

The fabric is the product

A canvas awning is only as good as its cloth. We use imported French acrylic, Scotchgarded for protection against sun, rain and mildew — it holds its colour where cheaper canvas fades to pastel in two summers. Fittings are aluminium, stainless steel and brass, so coastal air has nothing to rust.

Design ideas that work

  • Stripes on classic homes: bold awning stripes suit cottages, Victorians and anything with shutters.
  • Solid colours on modern façades: a plain charcoal or navy canopy reads crisp and architectural.
  • Repeat, don't mix: the same profile and fabric across every window gives the façade rhythm.
  • Coordinate with the roof and trim rather than the wall colour — it anchors the look.

Installation tips from the trade

Get the projection right for your aspect: north-facing windows want deeper cover in summer but should still admit the low winter sun. Fix into structure — brick or lintel, never plaster alone. And on adjustable designs, make sure the mechanism is a proper gearbox, not a friction joint that slips after a season. All standard practice on our installations, along with the free measuring visit.

The bottom line

Canvas door and window awnings are one of the most cost-effective upgrades a façade can get — cooler rooms, protected interiors and instant character. See profiles and fabrics on our canvas door and window awnings page, or request a free quote in Cape Town or Johannesburg.
