What are fascia boards, and why do they matter?
Fascia boards are the horizontal panels along the edge of the roof. They support the bottom row of tiles and carry the gutter system. Without solid fascia, roof edges sag and water finds its way into places it shouldn't — and in Cape Town's rainy winters, that happens fast. Proper fascia keeps moisture off the roofing and walls, cutting the risk of rot and mould.
The material options
- Timber fascia — the classic look for heritage and traditional homes, at the cost of regular maintenance.
- Fibre cement fascia — resistant to rot, fire and termites.
- PVC fascia — lightweight, low-maintenance and cost-effective.
- Aluminium fascia — durable and corrosion-resistant, the strongest choice for coastal suburbs.
For Cape Town's climate, aluminium and fibre cement earn their premium. Aluminium is what we use on our own structures: colour-matched to the house, and on our awnings it doubles as part of the guttering system — see how our facia and supports work.
Roof supports: the other half of the job
Supports keep the roof structure secure, especially under heavy loads — tiled roofs, solar panels, wide patio covers. Quality supports are treated timber or galvanised steel (ours are aluminium on awning structures, concreted in or bolted and plated), and professional installation keeps everything aligned through storms and high winds.
Why professional installation matters
Badly fitted fascia and supports show themselves within a couple of seasons: sagging gutters, leaks, a wavy roofline. Experienced installers work to code, use weather-resistant materials and anchor everything properly — the boring discipline that decides whether the roofline still looks sharp in ten years.
Maintenance and repairs
Existing fascia ages — water damage, cracking, tired paint. Typical servicing covers resealing and repainting, replacing damaged boards, reinforcing supports, and cleaning and realigning gutters. A small maintenance habit prevents a large roofing bill.
Matched to your home's style
Modern, Cape Dutch or classic suburban — fascia profiles and colours can be chosen to suit the building, which lifts both the function and the face of the roof. If your fascia is part of a new awning or patio cover, we'll spec it as one system, gutters and downpipes included.
