What are drop blinds?
Drop blinds — sometimes called outdoor roller blinds — are vertical blinds that pull down to shield an open side of a patio, balcony or terrace against wind, rain and harsh sun. Roll them up and the space is wide open again; roll them down and you've closed the weather out.
Ours are made from imported, Scotchgarded French acrylic or UV-resistant PVC with clear window panels, so you can seal the space without losing the view. Each blind runs on a maintenance-free gearbox and crank that keeps the fabric taut in the wind — the difference between a fitted blind and a flapping sail. The gearbox can also be motorised.
Where drop blinds earn their keep
- Residential patios and balconies — evening wind protection and privacy
- Restaurants and cafés — outside tables that stay bookable in winter
- Offices with outdoor areas — meeting and break spaces that work year-round
- Shops and storefronts — shade for displays and entrances
- Poolside lounges — wind screening without walls
The benefits, plainly
- Weather protection: rain, wind and low sun stay outside the line of the blind.
- Privacy: enjoy the patio without an audience.
- UV resistance: furniture, cushions and floors stop fading.
- Energy efficiency: less heat gain through adjacent windows and doors.
- Style: a wide choice of fabrics and colours that suit the building instead of hiding it.
Why quality matters more outdoors
A drop blind lives in the weather. Cheap fabric fades in a season of Johannesburg UV, and a flimsy mechanism seizes after a Cape winter. That's why we use French acrylic that holds its colour, fittings that don't corrode, and gear-driven rollers that tension the blind properly. It's also why the same blinds we fit on Blouberg beachfront homes work in Bedfordview.
Getting it done
Every set of blinds is made to measure — a consultant visits, measures the openings, and recommends fabric or PVC panels based on how you use the space. See the full product detail on our drop blinds page, or request a free quote and we'll come to you, in Cape Town or Johannesburg.
